Old Reigatian RFC

1st XV v Old Dartfordians – 11th Feb, 2023, Match Report

On Saturday Old Reigatian 1st XV hosted Dartfordians who despite their position of one off the foot of the table they had beaten OR’s 19-3 at their ground and the Reigate team were certainly looking to reverse that result Saturday.

The team looked strong with Jack Baart making his first start since breaking his leg back in October, joining him in the back row was new recruit Finlay Lock who has been in outstanding since he joined at Christmas and Oli Brooks who has shown some great form this season. Gareth Stephens and Max Coyle were partners in the midfield again.

Reigatian looked to run the ball as much as possible and it only took ten minutes for Baart to score with some play finally the ball coming to the left wing with Tight Head Prop Mike Layzell out wide to give the final pass to Baart 5-0.

Although ORs remained the dominant team it was another 15 minutes before the score board was worried again this time with potentially the try of the season. It started with a Line out inside the Reigatian half the ball was moved along the back line and Harrison Mitchell was tackled on the right wing the ball was then moved back across the field with reilly Franklin-Talbot setting up a phase from this Max Coyle made a break and managed to offload to Ciaran Nestor the Hooker making 20 meters before being brought down quick ball won again back across the pitch for Mitchell to score back on the right wing. Again, no conversion 10-0.

The quality continued this time Gareth Stephens and Lock combining to break the gainline Max Coyle was away with a defender to beat he passed inside to Alex Skinner, Lucas Overtoom added the conversion 17-0 after 25 minutes.

With Half Time approaching OR’s managed one last score that Baart again making good ground with this time Stephens in support to score, Overtoom added the extras 24-0 at half time and a try scoring bonus point.

With the second half under way Dartfordians had obviously had a chance to regroup and they were always going to come back at the Reigate team. Their Scrum Half was a good runner with the ball and set off on a weaving run to claim their first points of the day to score under the posts to give their kicker an easy kick to make the score 24-7.

However Reigatian’s were soon back on the scoresheet with Baart once again making a break from inside his own half making about 40 meters to fine Skinner again in support on the inside for him to claim his second try of the afternoon. Overtoom finding his range and slotting the conversion 31-7.
On the half hour Overtoom’s clearance kick which was reclaimed by Skinner who feed Coyle and with Lock in support the young flanker claimed his second try and the lead moved to 38-7 with Overtoom’s kick.

With 5 minutes left on the clock Fin Coyle came off his wing to collect the ball in the midfield and using his pace and great footwork he scored the home side’s last try of the afternoon.

Credit to Dartfordian who kept working and managed a last try in the 44th minute of the second half to make the final score 43-12. A pleasing performance to make it three wins on the bounce, next week they travel to Battersea Ironsides where 4th plays 5th so this should be a great game and a must win if Old Reigatian are going to hang on to 4th in the League.
