Old Reigatian 1st XV v Cobham, Match Report

Old Reigatian 36 v Cobham 22

On Saturday Old Reigatian 1st XV hosted Cobham who pre match sat two places above them in the league table with four wins from their six games and with OR’s three wins it was going to be a tight fixture.

Reigatians welcomed back Jack Baart from injury and the two Sam’s Turner & Foreman who had been in France watching the World Cup (England & New Zealand respectfully).

The return of these players seemed to give the side confidence and they showed the form that had given them such a strong start to the season. Within 5 minutes Sam Turner has chased a kick ahead from Max Coyle to score the home sides first try of the afternoon, This effort was closely followed by the Green and Blue forwards claiming a turn over in midfield the ball moved quickly to the left wing where Finn Coyle in only his second game back from injury returned to history scoring ways to move the score to 10-0 in under ten minutes.

Cobham are a quality team and their set piece worked well all day after twenty minutes they stole a Reigatian lineout and set up a driving maul. The visitors big pack got some forward momentum and claimed their first try making the score 10-5.

The home team had been working on putting pressure on the team in defensive and Cobham had a handling error in the midfield Max Coyle was the first to react and hacked the ball on over the try line. Lucas Overtoom converted to make the half time score 17-5.

The second took a while to settle and then sprung to life with another Max Coyle try Overtoom kicking the extra points 24-5 and it was starting to look comfortable for the Home side. But Cobham kept fighting and looked to be putting together some nice play in the backs when a loose pass was thrown and that man Max Coyle intercepted the pass and ran in his third try from about the half way line. Finally after 20 minutes Or’s showed some great handling down the right wing with Woodford, Baart and then Lock Oli Brooks showed great pace down the right wing to finish off a great move and make sure it wasn’t just the Coyle family that scored the trys!. With the score at 36-5 Cobham could have been forgiven for throwing in the towel but fair play they came back and showed great pride to take the game to the Reigate team finish with three last minuye trys to claimtheir try scoring bonus point which was well deserved. Final score 36-22 which leapfrogged Old Reigatians back up the league to fourth with only eight points separating 1st to 7th in the league it is still early days. Rest day next Saturday for the RWC Final and the Reigatian host second place Battersea Ironsides which should be a great fixture.
