Surrey Rugby Walking Rugby Festival 2024
August 18 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
This summer appears to be bringing a real mix of weather, and here at Old Reigatian Walking Rugby it feels like we have been ‘just walking in the rain’ and trying to ply our trade ‘against the wind’, much of the time, even though the last couple of weeks have seen us ‘walking on sunshine’, as we would anticipate and hope for when the ‘living [should be] easy’.
However, come August 18th, whatever the forecast, a warm welcome will await you at Old Reigatian RFC, Park Lane, Reigate, where in the region of 24 teams from across the UK will take part in the high growth, a new format that is walking rugby.
As well as the ‘on-field antics’, there will be a raffle to raise funds for our charities, BBQ and well-stocked Club and Pilgrim Brewery bar to sustain you, as well as some cool jazz [local legends Red’s Dreamers] to entertain you – a Sunday made for a combination of fun and relaxation.
A few words from Old Reigatian WR Captain and a director of Sport Parkinsons, Hamish Turnbull:
‘A few ex-playing mates and I started up our walking rugby section a couple of years ago. We’ve gone from a merry core of six to nearly 40 players.
At the outset, I struggled to last the training sessions, but still persevered, managing to stay upright for most 10-minute matches. Being back, interacting and socialising in team sport has improved my overall wellbeing 100%.
Our aim at Old Reigatians is to begin looking at how we can attract Parkinson’s battlers and those with other conditions to take part in the sport. It is a guarantee of great fun and great satisfaction, with full inclusivity and a reassurance that safety is paramount, at all times.Through contacts with other likeminded charities, the club has worked with MND, MS and PUK. It’s our intention to network with these and more local neuro / auto immune related organisations.
So, join us at the Surrey Rugby Walking Rugby Festival, at Old Reigatian RFC, Park Lane, Reigate, in August, where we hope to attract a good number of newly diagnosed ‘battlers’ to come along and experience playing, alongside those more seasoned players. Beginners and more practiced heads are more than welcome to take part and enjoy the day. At walking rugby – you’ll never walk alone!’
