We started off the day with a tough game against an experienced and very physical Havant side. We battled hard and the girls did brilliantly to stick together and showed great resilience against this more experienced opposition. Despite the result not going our way in this game we were all incredibly impressed with the attitude of all the girls. Our only try of the game came from Rowan showing an impressive turn of pace to run from our own half. Olivia, Izzy and Isla tackled hard, often stopping much bigger players, with Megan, Rowan and Sude battling at the breakdown area to help us retain the ball.
In our next game we came up against another new opposition in Old Albanians. This was a far more even contest and after a slightly slow start we came into our and fought back with a number of unanswered tries to be within a score of the opposition. Despite our strong momentum we unfortunately ran out of time before grabbing an equaliser.
Our tries came from Felicity as she side-stepped down the touchline, one from Sophia as she dived in from close range and a couple of tries from Izzy showing her fantastic pace. Zeta and Molly both had good games making a number of strong carries as they both grew in confidence.
Our final game was against a more familiar Old Guildfordians team. In the final game it all seemed to click and we recorded a very strong performance running in 9 tries, including a quick fire hat-trick from Sude in the last quarter of the game, meaning she finished with 5 tries overall. Erin scored a well deserved try, as well as Mimi after one of her many determined runs. Rowan increased her tally to 3 tries for the day. Again our competitiveness at the ruck area improved and Amelie and Molly playing well in helping us retain the ball.
Overall it was a very positive start to our season with lots of new players gaining valuable experience. The girls are bonding really well as a group and the fantastic team spirit they are showing will go a long way to ensuring we have a great season.
